Introduction:

The Mire Ecosystem Transition Areas Flux project (October 2012 - September 2014) is funded by an FP7 Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship [Project number: 299862]. The project used satellite and airborne data to examine the effect of thawing permafrost on northern peatlands in Sweden.

As the climate warms in the northern latitudes, sub-Arctic permafrost peatlands are thawing. This has an impact the carbon dynamics in these areas. In this project multispectral, hyperspectral and LiDAR data were used to examine the impact of climate change over space and time. In these northern regions, thawing permafrost affects the geomorphology, vegetation and hydrology of peatlands. This is leading to changes in the carbon dynamics in the sub-Arctic.
